Intranets and Extranets
While the primary motivation for middle-market sized companies to develop an
Internet strategy is marketing related there are other benefits to consider -
primarily Intranets and Extranets. Intranets and extranets are extensions of a
traditional web site that serve as productivity and customer/partner
relationship mechanisms. Intranets and extranets are the most common
manifestation of eBusiness.
Intranet. In short an Intranet is a private website for a
company's internal staff to use. Intranets typically contain things like human
resource or benefit information, contact information, internal reports, company
tools to increase productivity, timesheet reporting etc.
Extranet. In short an Extranet is also a private website,
which links a company with its trading partners (both customers and business
partners). Extranets have a vast array of possibilities, including information
sharing, customer self service, project management, billing, event management
etc.
