Computerized Pantry Management for the
Home: ViewSource’s Yates Selected as Software/Hardware Concept Developer
One of only 100 programmers in the nation asked to propose uses for new Internet
appliance
(Cincinnati, OH -- June 15, 2000) -- Nick Yates, application developer with
ViewSource Media, a marketing communications firm, has been chosen by
Netpliance to submit new uses for the company’s i-openerTM
Internet appliance.
The i-opener is a $99 basic computer system designed for accessing the Web. It
consists of a color monitor, a keyboard and basic computer components.
Realizing the machines could be used for additional applications, Netpliance
began a nationwide search among programmers May 8 to obtain ideas. Yates is one
of only 100 applicants accepted into the company’s pilot program, in which
he’ll receive a free i-opener system for experimentation.
Yates’ proposal involves enabling the i-opener as a "home automation
system" capable of monitoring and controlling household functions. His
plan is to put an i-opener in every room of a home, with each unit having
oversight of specific functions. For example, the i-opener in the master
bedroom could automatically turn lights on or off and manage the home’s climate
control system.
Yates’ plan for a kitchen i-opener involves pantry management. For example,
someone could choose a week’s worth of recipes, the system would determine
which ingredients were on-hand, order anything necessary from a grocery
provider, such as Peapod, and schedule supplies for delivery in time for a
day’s designated recipe.
"The i-opener can make home automation affordable," said Yates.
"I’m looking forward to setting up my prototype and showing what it can
do."
